Our distinguished columnist, Eberhard Spree of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, is a world-renowned scholar on Anna Magdalena Bach (1701-1760), Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) second wife. Spree is also the author of the only scientific blog in the world dedicated to exploring her life and legacy.
In 2018, Spree earned his doctorate in musicology – specializing in Anna Magdalena Bach – at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’ University in Leipzig. In 1989, during the tenure of Kurt Masur, Spree joined the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra where he plays the double bass.
